Peto Presents: Harriet Tubman in New Jersey

Thursday, June 23, 2022
7:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m.
Methodist Church, Fellowship Hall
111 Ocean Avenue | Island Heights, NJ

On Thursday, June 23 at 7:00, we proudly present an evening devoted to Harriet Tubman and her heroic struggle in New Jersey to lead enslaved people to freedom. Learn about her work with the Underground Railroad and why she used Cape May as her base. Our speaker will be Cindy Mullock, Executive Director of the newly-established Harriet Tubman Museum of New Jersey, which the Smithsonian Magazine declared as one of 2020’s most anticipated museums in the country. Ms. Mullock will explore Tubman’s dangerous travels to slave states, and will also discuss the rich African-American history of Cape May in the years before the Civil War.

Volunteer Spotlight

We’d like to extend a big thank you to our docents and greeters. Without you, and your dedication, we would not be able to offer art exhibitions to the public.

Unlike many other Museums, the Peto does not permit visitors to walk unaccompanied through our galleries. Instead, visitors are welcomed at the door by one of our greeters, who show the videotape about the Museum, make visitors feel welcome, provide them with information about membership and upcoming events, and obtain their contact information.

The docent-led tour then begins. Each of our docents has received special training from our Curator about the works of art on display in the current exhibition. This special training maximizes visitors’ enjoyment of the exhibit.

We want to specifically thank Harry Bower, Colleen Kehler, Denise Summer, Barbara Hanna, George Hanna, Fran Jorin, Sally Van Duyne, Dennis Broschart, Ellen Columbus, Kiki Arevalo, and last, but certainly not least, our volunteer coordinator Joyce Kaizar.

Your dedication, enthusiasm and commitment are appreciated by all.

Anyone interested in volunteering as a greeter or docent should please contact us at info@petomuseum.org.

Blue Star Museums provide FREE ADMISSION to all active duty service members and their families.
Program starts Saturday, May 21, 2022 and runs through Sunday, September 4, 2022
